Why is GeoCities closing?
There is not straight forward reason from Yahoo. But, all this seems to be, Yahoo planned to Reduce the cost of maintain all the free web servers. And this way they can increase the paid web hosting revenue. Here is what Yahoo saying…
We have enjoyed hosting web sites created by Yahoo! users all over the world, and we’re proud of the community you’ve built.
However, we have decided to focus on helping our customers explore and build relationships online in other ways. Beginning on October 26, 2009, you will no longer be able to use GeoCities to maintain a free presence online — but we’re excited about the other services we have designed to help you connect with friends and family and share your activities and interests.
Yahoo Suspended Signup’s long time back?
It’s yes, as per TechCrunch’s publication on April 23, 2009.
Not with a bang, but with a whimper. Yahoo! is unceremoniously closing GeoCities, one of the original web-hosting services acquired by Yahoo! in 1999 for $2.87 Billion. (Fun venture fact: Fred Wilson’s Flatiron Partners was an investor). In a message on Yahoo!’s help site, the company said that it would be shuttering Geocities, a free web-hosting service, later this year and will not be accepting any new customers. Existing customers will still be able to access use GeoCities but Yahoo! is encouraging these customers to upgrade to Yahoo!’s paid Web Hosting service.
Are you satisfied with Yahoo’s reason? I’m not! Do you have a blog there? Share with us! Happy Blogging!!

I don’t use it though, but my first personal home was on tripod.

I am surprised that there are no emotional comments on this post. Because many people including me had their first page created on Geocities.
May be you people are too young but there used to be a time when the average engineering student did not have a credit card forget about paypal account or Adsense. The free hosts used to be the only way we could manage to express ourselves online
Ohh You had blog there? Did you took it out now?

They Do not give any means for you to redirect. I called and they say – no redirect. But I already transferred my site to their other site, bought domain and service from them. Does anyone knows what is going on?
If you buy a premium with them, then you don’t need to bother really. But i Do expect that, they should give redirect option to those premium customers at least.
Was their webhosting package reliable in present? I would love to know some reviews about yahoo webhosting services.
My friends in school have a site hosted by Geocities. But they are not aware what was the latest updates from geocities.
So I told them that their websites will no longer available on the web starting October 26, 2009.
And they are so sad…
