Who is Reading your Blog? – Part 1

September 16th, 2009 by Lax

So, you started your new gardening blog that you are so passionate about a month back and you still have your best friend and your pet as the only visitors?? You are desperate now and searching for tips to get more visitors to your blog…therefore, you are reading this blog!! Do you see what I did here? Did you understand why you are a visitor to my blog but I am not a visitor to yours?

Let me reveal you the secret. You are reading this because I somehow found out that this is what my readers want to read! It is this simple and this is the secret of any successful blog that is on the Internet today.

The central idea to write a blog, even if it is about your favorite topic is who is reading it? However, before you can analyze what your reader wants next, one has to first understand who is reading your blog or for the benefit of the newbie’s who should be reading your blog. There are many ways you can determine that –

# Find your niche: Before you start protesting “But gardening is my niche!” think again. When you try to find more about gardening, do you just Google “gardening”? Most of us won’t. A normal Internet user would want to read his specific area of interest which might be “where to get the pesticides for my garden”, or may be, “gardening tips for a beginner”. Therefore, drill down in to blog topic, analyze what do you love about that topic and make that your niche…so, your blog USP can be – gardening tips for a beginner! That will give you visitors who actually want to read what you have so painstakingly written.

# Polls: Now that is a very good tool that most of the blogs give it free and an excellent way to know what your readers want. Nevertheless, do not shove it aside in one corner of your blog. Try to blend it with one of your blog posts where there are more chances that readers would actually take the survey. Your polls can be worded in a way that would point to the next topic and can be discussed with your readers.

# Forums: Once you have decided on your USP, it becomes easier for you to know where your readers would lie. Visit various forums where you can find your potential readers discussing your ideas. Not only would you get many ideas as to what your readers want, you can also leave in valuable comments and sneak in your blog address in it. However, do not just go and post your blog address there. It repels lot of users. Participate effectively in discussions to build readership before you can redirect them to your blog.

So, before you start typing out your next blog post, take time to know your readers first. Whether you love blogging or blogging for money, without those readers, none of your objectives would be met!

The golden rule is – successful blogs are made by readers, not writers! So, start on your journey to find readers for your blog!

Again, once you find them, how do you keep them? More in the next post…keep watching this space!

Hope you found it useful. Now, who is reading your blog? Share with us! Happy Blogging!!
