Top 6 Mistakes Twitter Users Commit
As we all know twitter has become one of the most successful social media networking site in a very short period of time. Many of the popular bloggers across the globe believes that twitter is their major referring site to their blog. So, if you can use twitter effectively you can drive in visitors to your blog more easily and in large numbers. Most of us want to use twitter as effectively as possible but still there are some very common mistakes we all commit in order to increase our followers. Here I present to you the 6 most common mistakes that are committed and should be avoided.
#1 Uninteresting Tweets
In order to post more number of tweets, at times we post uninteresting tweets. When you post tweets that are not at all interesting then people will not even bother to go through them and if this goes on for some period of time then people may unfollow you or may not read your tweets at all even if you are publishing some good news. So, post interesting and useful tweets or don’t tweet at all.
#2 Not Conversing or Replying to your Followers
By conversing or replying, I don’t mean to say ‘goodbye’, ‘thank you’ or ‘take care’ kind of messages. One needs to have a productive and worthwhile conversation to start with. When you share information and other news with your followers, you should also take out time to reply to their queries if any. This way you become a very active member in twitter which is very important to gain popularity.
#3 Not Displaying a Clear Bio and Avatar
Both Bio and Avatar are very important to create an identity for you. People will follow and remember you by your profile name and display picture. When you don’t define it properly, you are lost among thousand other twitter users who are twitting every day. Your Bio should be short, clear and to the point.
#4 Constantly Replying to Popular Tweets
This is a very common behavior among bloggers to gain their popularity in twitter. I must tell you that this will not let you gain popularity in twitter so easily. You need to be genuine in your approach and should not be reply and ping any other popular twitter user just for the sake of gaining popularity. This will simply annoy the user and will lead to losing that user from your follower list.
#5 Posting Tweets only for the Promotion of your Blog
People think that by posting the links of their article they can get good amount of visitors to their site. This is true but when you post only for the sole purpose of Promoting your blog, then it becomes a problem. People won’t show interest any more with the same kind of news all the time. You should also publish tweets other than your blog which is interesting and informative. That may be related to current affairs or any other burning issues nowadays. People will definitely look forward for your tweets.
#6 Not Following Back any of your Followers
It’s always a wise decision to follow those followers of yours who show interest in your tweets and who are popular too. Mostly you will find renowned celebrities who have a large no. of followers although they follow back very few of them. That is not the case with us. We need to respect and follow back those who love our tweets and are worth following.
These are some of the most common mistakes according to me that twitter users commit. If you Avoid these mistakes then you can unleash the power of twitter more effectively and can make it as the most important referrer to your site. Please let me know if you know some more mistakes out here which are as important as those mentioned above.

Some very true points there Lax, although I don’t quite understand why “constantly replying to popular tweets” would cause your followers to unfollow you. I get what you’re trying to say, but in practice, unless it is excessive/spamming, then I don’t see the problem.
Maybe because, you’ll sound boring if you “constantly” replying to popular tweets. I think, most people are interested about you and not your Comment about other tweets.
I Do agree with u..most of them are ‘in love’ with you not your tweets..It’s just like you have a lot of fan.
I understand what you’re saying Renino, but no-one can tweet ‘constantly’. Yes, excessive tweeting can be annoying, but often people follow others for quick links to breaking interesting stories. These usually come from popular twitter accounts. Retweeting can therefore be of use to your followers if they missed it themselves. That’s just my opinion.
Moderate is the key. No excessive re tweets, no excessive link to your own blog and no excessive boring tweets. Just be moderate in your tweets and you’ll be fine.
Do agree with you..being moderate is very ok! not only in tweeting but in all of our work..
I think ZXT is right. As long as you Do not abuse it too much. There’s no problem with it.
Abusing in any way is wrong and get you into trouble not only in Twitter but also in real life and other online activities.
Well a very detailed article, must say Twitter spam is something bad for profile and online Reputation too, I am not agree with Point #6 because following everyone will create an unnecessary noise in your profile. In Tweetdeck we have an option to make our own friend list, but we can’t make a list very big when there are more than 500 genuine followers.
For me, #6 is ok but the disadvantage is, it’s hard to follow everybody. I mean, read all their tweets all the time.
You don’t have to read every tweets of those you follow. You’ll just get the last 20 or so tweets in your Twitter home page. You can go to the next page if you want to read more. Now based on the tweets of those you follow, you can unfollow then if you happen to not like their tweets.
Does this means I am only be able to unfollow someone if he/she posts unwanted tweets?
@Himanshu,
Very true my friend. That’s what I mean. Following back twitter members is not mandatory.
You must select who you would follow.
Most of my followers are spammers.
As Felix said..should select the real twitterer only.. We don’t need to use twitter all the time..just spend 1 hour on it to Do promotion or to update your status..Otherwise is just waste your t
Yes Anish, something like 4% of all tweets are spam, which, considering how many tweets there are per day, is quite a lot.
4% is acceptable but if most of your followers are spammers, there must be a problem.
How did you know they are mostly spammers?
No it’s just a assumption, when mostly your follower is spammer then don’t followe them.
Well, to know their are spammer or no is of course by follow them, right? And then when it’s really spammer, just unfollow it
Yeah its quite easy, You can see from their tweets. Mostly paid tweets, pay per click tweets or affiliate tweets.
Lucky me, most of people i follow is not spammer
I’m so strict about unfollow people who spammer.
But Do you not think that if you don’t follow back someone that is following you, there is a possibility that they will decide to unfollow you? It’s personal preference at the end of the day, but it’s good practice.
It’s relative…
Their will stay following you when their get something usefull on your tweet. I know there is some account have a thousand follower but that account not following anyone because their tweet is usefull. It’s detikcom twitter account (just check it)
If it’s me, i’ll surely follow my followers, but i’ll check their tweeting activity after it. If in the case, yes…their tweet is unusefull or spam, of course i will unfollow them.
I totally agree with you. check their activities after you have added them to your following list and Do unfollow them if they are spammers.
I Do unfollow people who make my twitter home fulfilled by him tweet, about 10-20 tweet in half hours, the tweet is about asking him follower to join mafia wars family, it’s annoying
Sadly, i am not following any of the above.
If you are serious about using twitter to get more traffic into your blog site, follow the steps above. I’ve heard of it before but not as detailed as this. Thanks lax for sharing this very informative advice.
I am not getting much clicks
You just need to build up a loyal follower base, and interact with them. Then they’ll be more happy to retweet, and so you’ll get more clicks.
Also with twitter program which offer to pay you per click created on your tweet. The list above is help us to increase our tweet conversion rate.
It’s not too late Anish. We can start all over and follow the above steps Lax has written.
Well you should follow the tips above if you want to improve you Twitter experience.
Really? “Any” of the above? Ok, not late, now and forever, use the list above as a guide to Do twitter activity
and you’ll find great change.
Oh, I didn’t realize #3 is very important. Thanks lax for this very useful advice. I’ll upload my avatar asap.
You can see my profie for an example..I make a nice background with short bio or decription about me.
Yes, you can often tell from a twitter page and bio, whether that person is a spammer or just there simply for money making purposes, without any interest in who he/she’s following.
Spammer is not manage their bio and avatar properly, so i’m agree with ben that we can track people is spammer or no. Mostly spammer use no avatar, basic template, and very short bio
Well i don’t know #3 is affecting our twitter account condition but i’m using avatar because i just feel uncomfortable with blank avatar. It’s not good looking and seem unprofesional. If you have free time, see my avatar
. Handsome or no
?
I fell that twitting really need hard work after read this article.
It’s easy once you know how to use twitter and how to handle it..
I think the other way around. You don’t have to feel that way most especially if you are making a lot of friends at twitter. If you really love what you are doing, even if you are tired and exhausted, you will not feel the hardships of your work, most especially if you are seeing good results.
Yeah..agree with you..Do what you love..it is the same as you blogging what you love..
Yes Dana, its not really easy and come to think of it, blogging itself is hard work.
But in a return, you’ll get many follower and every of your tweet is so valuable
It’s kind of investment.
But Lax! Your twitter profile still now don’t participate in any interaction and you just use it for posting TZI posts from twitterfeed!
I still wonder why don’t you use twitter for a minute atleast!
I Do think that same way “Why am not concentrating on twitter?”
I’m learning things to start and am finding time to learn
I’ll join you guys very soon..
Err you don’t practive what you preach Lax
Hoping to see you more active at Twitter soon.
maybe Lax active in other social media sites..inform us if you start using twitter actively..
He may well be Een. With a rapidly expanding blog, I guess Lax has to prioritize, and Twitter may not be top of his list at the moment. I’m sure he’ll get round to it soon enough though.
I hope too so he can take advantage of Twitter and gain more traffic.
Hahaha. I strongly believe, Lax is busy doing very informative posts that’s why he still hasn’t started concentrating on twitter.
Am I right Lax?
to some extent
Ok, i can understand. When you’re ready to jump into tweeting world, make sure to follow me and i will follow you also.
No need to be so active, just 2-3 tweet per day is OK.
I’m understand Lax condition. I find this blog is frequently updated and managed well, so i’m sure him priority for now is a blog. And don’t forget he need to moderate a lot of Comment every day. So, i think it’s a reason why Lax is not active yet on tweeting world
Why is that many successful blogger today like john chow have large amount of followers but less amount of following?
I think it is not necessary to follow someone if they follow you.
You must follow someone if he could help you for some Reasons in your blogging career.
I also think that it is not wise to follow someone which is not related to your niche.
You know what..many ‘robot’ twitterer are following sucessfull bloggers that’s why they just follow back the real twitterer( meaning the real person who use twitter for communication not for only Promoting purpose)
Yes, well usually for larger blogs, their genuine, loyal blog readers will follow them on twitter, but for smaller blogs, we sometimes have to gain followers. That sometimes involves following them back. Problogger has good articles on this, and is a strong believer in this practice.
It takes time to build and gain loyal readers like them…John Chow took 4 years to build his blogging carrier..
I think 4 years is too long time to build success blog. Even we know blogging is not easy work but if we’re creative, you can Reduce the time to be success.
@Earn Money: John Chow has many followers because he is famous. Look at Shaq or Ashton Kutcher, they got millions of followers because they are famous and people are interested in what they are going to say.
You don’t expect them to follow everyone followed them Do you?
Now if you are not that famous then its advisable to follow someone who follows you unless its a spammer or really very uninteresting folk or not an active Twitterer.
@ZXT,
Hello my friend. You are right my friend. But in the world of blogging, many successful bloggers today who use robots to follow someone following popular people.
They Do following expecting to be followed. In order to unfollow someone, they also use robots to unfollow who are not active.
I learn that thing from Micheal Dunlop.
I learn it too..Even I havea script that can make my twitter profile run automatically..
http://dossy.org/twitter/karma/ is quite popular. You’ve just got to make sure you don’t get too crazy with it, or they’ll suspend your account for excessive following and unfollowing.
Thanks ben for the link
Thanks for your input but following those who follow important people isn’t enough to connect on Twitter. You still have to Tweet interesting topics every now and then.
I am not sure about uninteresting tweets. What uninteresting to others might be interesting to some.
I also think Twitter is not about interesting tweets all the time. I think it’s about connecting to other people, interesting tweets or not.
To know others are intersted to your tweets or not, you have to find the person that has same interest with you..It’s easy where you can use search function at twitter and find that person..
I think so too. It’s a social network to begin with. the reason these type of advices come in is because, we want to gain benefits from twitter by attracting more followers.
Personally i am not interesting tweeting
.
@Anish,
Before, I am not interested on twitter, because I think it can’t help me gathering traffic to my blog.
But it was changed when I saw my referral traffic records on google analytics that twitter is my #3 giving traffic to my blog.
So what I did was, after I publish my new content, I tweet it to my followers and other members.
Try it. It might work for you….
Yes..twitter bring a lot of traffic to my blog besides Facebook and stumbleupon
Yes, me too. I love the multiplier effect on twitter, when you tweet, it gets retweeted and then that gets retweeting. You can get a lot of traffic, so I strongly recommend you try it out.
It’s different strokes for different folks.
But Twitter proves to be a good source of traffic to those effectively using it. So you might as well try it if you want more traffic.
Based on your twitter account purpose, ZXT. If you make twitter acc for tweet politic information, make sure you’re only followed by people who interesting on politic and only make a tweet about politic. Also if you make twitter account about blogging, make sure you’re followed by blogger and tweet about blogging. When you’re tweeting something unrelated to your account purpose, it’s uninteresting.
I know, one interesting tweet may uninteresting for another. And i find there is no fix criteria to say the tweet is interesting or no. But my opinion is, interesting tweet is have a weight and unique.
Peoples are using twitter for many purposes..all the points written may be true for us who run a site or a blog seriously. but people who just want have fun usually using twitter don’t care about it..even they tweet when they want to pee..My advice is to find twitterer that has same interest with you..
This means, you have to follow different people to meet people that have the same interest as yours.
Thats the basic idea for us bloggers whos trying to promote something. But I bet there are Twitter users out there without blogs and yet have millions of followers. Also more than half of Twitter users doesn’t have their own site.
What I’m trying to say is, the article is about Twitter users not necessarily Twitter users with blogs.
And lot of spammers also there.
@Een Rockstar,
You are right my friend. Some celebrities here in my country – Philippines, often Do following twitter members in order to be followed back.
That’s why most of them have many followers but their purpose of joining twitter is not for Promoting one site or product but for fun or communication.
That’s why we as a blogger who have a blog need to find the person that are in same boat…
Or even ship because blogging world is really big.
Are you saying the celebrity in the Phils has the same number of followers and the same number of people they follow? Can you name a couple?
I don’t think they have same quantity followers with people they’re following..
A lot don’t, but it’s easy for them, obviously because of their fame and loyal fanbase that they have already built.
But whats the point? I mean Earn Money said Celebs in Phils follows a lot of people hoping they will follow back. That means they will get the same number of followers for those they follow.
Britney spears is another example of someone who follows a lot of those who follow her. She follows 400k. Okay, she has a follower base of over 3 million, but there’s no way she can possibly interact with all 400k that she’s actively following.
Yeah but that was like 9 is to 1. For every 9 people follows her she only follow one of them.
Understandable considering britney spear busy-ness. And i’m not sure birtney ownself who manage the twitter acc. Maybe she rent someone?
Agree, because not all twitter created for business. Actually, the main concept of twitter is also not for business, because their tag is “What are you doing?”, right?
Hey thanks for all this points lax, I always make sure I follow back everyone who follows me and also make sure I am not posting links for my blog
Amar you can post links to your blog becuase its part of why we Tweet. Just don’t Do it for very Tweet. Maybe 10 percent of your Tweets is acceptible.
@Amar,
You can what you want on twitter my friend like Promoting your blog, affiliate products or communicating your friends.
But you can’t Do spamming or else you will be terminated.
Hahaha Terminated….
I’ll be back!
Seriously, you can’t spam anywhere not just on Twitter.
I commit all the above mention mistakes now i think its high time to take care of all this points
Well its never too late to correct our mistakes.
ya true i still have time to correct it
My Tips
1, Follow your Followers
2, You can link your RSS feed to twitter (Lot of third party sites doing the same, eg friendfeed.com)
I don’t agree with point no. 6 as i don’t find it necessary to follow everyone who follows you.Een has pointed out that some people tweet for fun….. you need to find out tweeters who are like minded.
The advice to follow someone who just followed you is to connect with that individual. Twitter is mainly about connecting just like blogging hence called micro blogging.
If someone commented on our blogs, we have the tendency to check theirs too, so like in Twitter, if someome followed you, then you follow them.
You decide later on if you want to keep following the person.
You got the point my friend. I agree with your thoughts. Thank you for sharing ZXT.
I hope could be friends.
Glad you agree Bro. Of course we can be friends. See you around.
I am not using twitter now. But going to add in my profile soon.
Add it, twitter twitter all over now.
Yes you should. Signing up with Twitter only takes a couple of minutes. Then start posting your Twitter name so we can add you.
No need of manual tweeting, we can link it by inserting rss feed in other sites. check the same.
How Do we do that Anish? Insseting RSS feed to other blogs/site/
Use it and find how usefull twitter is
Already join now? Congratulations and welcome to the blue-bird world
i recommend twitterfeed.com
Yes Anish, so Do I. It’s the biggest and the best. It now offers Facebook feeds as well, which is great because Facebook used to be a paint to update.
Okay if you guys recommends it, then I might start using Twitterfeed too.
Ya sure, I too use twitterfeed its just great. And the new feature in it of Facebook is helping me very much nowdays. More you use more you gain
Thanks for mentioning that Facebook feature as I also have Facebook account with almost a 1000 friends.
Make the use of it.
I already knew about twitterfeed but I don’t have an account on it yet.
But it’s worth trying. Thank you for the reminders.
Also try TweeterDeck, makes life easier for Twitterers.
I rarely use twitter. I don’t know but i dont like is
. But my friends say that its a good social networking to share and a way of getting traffic on your site. So i have started twitting now only. Thanks for these suggestions. I will surely follow them to avoid these mistakes
Arjun, post your twitter name so I can follow you. Anyone who’s interested to be followed pls reply with your Twitter name too.
Mine is @zxxxt just in case you want to follow me too.
Good offer
My twitter ID is akira07. I’ll follow you now. Thanks.
Thanks for the follow Akira, following you too now.
Hope some will follow too
Lax, it’s OK for all to post their twitter acc here? If yes, then post it, i will follow you since i trust you’re all not spammer
You have some excellent points here thats for sure, I personally find nothing more annoying about Twitter than people that constantly reply to popular tweets.
Yes thats pretty annoying if the person just tweets like that.
Thanks for the information. On my last exam, when i have free time, i’m join on 1 tweeting contest. Because i wanna win that contest, i Do 4-5x tweet per day, and the result i got my follower is decreased
Reading your tips, makes me more careful in next tweet and all of my activity on twitter. Thanks.
I’m always following my followers, but not always in same date when their follow me.
Akira, are you saying by retweeting your followers decreased? And thats for 4 to 5 times a day only?
Yes because retweeting, i find some follower unfollow me, dunno what the reason since we know 4 or 5x tweet/day is not too much, right?
And i’m sure you know what the tweeting contest which i state
Really? 5 tweets a day is no reason to unfollow you. Maybe just a concidence?
I hope it’s jsut concidence. But don’t worry, my twitter condition become normal again now
That’s nice to know. So any winners yet on the Twitter contest?
You are right. Retweeting same infomation more time can have adverse effect on your followers.
I have written Top 6 Twitter profile secrets(http://inforids.com/top-6-twitter-profile-secrets-for-twitter-users/) that can help you understant that more clearly.
Thank you for sharing the top 6 twitter profile secrets.
[...] 6 Mistakes Twitter Users Commit [...]
Avoid negativity or being drama queen at Twitter – it turns people off. Tweeters naturally gravitate towards positive, fun people.
And if you’ve massive followers, be cautious about what you tweet or complain about. Remember Stephen Fry’s public disagreement with a fellow tweeter? Hordes of Fry’s followers attacked the guy who they thought insulted Stephen Fry. Good thing, Stephen Fry proved to be a gentleman and rectified the situation by cautioning his followers to let the guy alone.
So there’s a lesson in there somewhere. Be a responsible tweeter.
Oh I didn’t know that. I didn’t know Twitter is turning into forums now.
