How Frequently Should I Update my Blog?

September 21st, 2009 by Lax

At some point in the blogging career every blogger has to face this question. How frequently should we update our blog ?. Should we post daily ? Or what is a good posting frequency so that the readership of our blog continues to grow ? In this article let us discuss some points regarding the correct posting frequency that a blogger can maintain.

Before we go further let us understand the factors on which the posting frequency of a blog depends

#1. Availability of Time: Time is the most dominating and important factor when it comes of deciding the posting frequency of your blog. You may be a Student or a working professional. You may have 2-3 hours a day or only 30 minutes to devote to your blog everyday. So time plays the most vital role in deciding how frequently you will be able to update your blog.

#2. Blog’s Niche: The topic in which your blog is focused is another factor to consider. If you have a blog on  “technology News” then it is expected to update your blog several times a day. However if  your blog is based on ” Gardening tips” then you can update your blog when you have something useful to say. The niche of your blog directly affects your posting frequency.Different blogs on different niches have different avenues of prosperity.

#3. Length of Posts: Every blog is different than the others. If you write a lot of long articles then  you would require much more time to finish your articles. Hence you can give a fewer number of updates. If your articles are 800-900 words long then it would be satisfactory to update your blog 3-4 times a week. However if your Post’s are small i.e 200-300 words long then you can give a good number of updates in a day. In short , The posting frequency depends on the style and length of your articles too.

#4. Number of Writers Available: A multi author blog is supposed to give a larger number of updates than a single author blog. That is the reason why Multi author blogs perform generally so well. if you are all alone in your blog then  you have to take care of everything like : Writing articles,Performing SEO, analyze the results, taking action, Designing etc etc. You might not have enough time to concentrate on the writing as you have to take care of other important works related to your blog.

So What is the Correct Posting Frequency?

The answer is ” There is no such definite rule of posting frequency that you need to maintain”. Every blog is different and every blogger has the right to choose his own style of blogging. Hence it depends upon the blogger and is completely his concern on when should he update his blog. But here are some points to follow regarding posting frequency (those you should not ignore):

#1. Maintain a Consistent Posting Frequency: Be it more be it less but stick to it. You may be able top update your blog only once a week or even once in two weeks. There is nothing wrong in that. But you should stick to the posting frequency  and try to maintain that. I have seen so many blogs those who write a couple of posts and after that no updates for several months. This loses credibility, consistency and hence the readership.

#2. Do not Compromise the Quality of Content: Whatever might be the number of posts you write, the quality of your posts need to be good enough. It is the quality of your articles that will separate you from the crowd. So never compromise on the quality of posts just to increase your posting frequency.

#3. Do not Increase or Decrease your Blog’s Posting Frequency Suddenly: Your readers are accustomed to a level of posts and there is always an expectation. if you lower down your posting frequency or raise it you break the expectation and hence it might be difficult to digest them at the readers end. So never lower down or increase the posting frequency in your blog suddenly.

Instead, develop a natural rhythm of blogging that you will be able to maintain in the long run. And again, never compromise on the quality of content just because you haven’t updated your blog in the last week !

Their are many conspiracy called myths in blogging. One top blogger update his blog once in month. When he feels his search engine traffic Reduce drastically. Few other write monster post of thousand words cover many keywords. And few other go with smaller post with many updates in week.

I think giving decent Quality content will give benefit in long terms. but one bad post will reduce your credibility.

    • Lax says:

Absolutely true dude..Its depends on the blog you maintain and the readers you have..But for newbies keep stick to one frequency is the suggestion we can give.

  • Anish K.S says:

For me i need daily Updates, Saturdays and Sundays no more Updates. My blog nature needs daily content.

  • I always try to publish at least 1 blog post a day (Except for the weekend, I want to have a rest :D )

Sometimes I’ll throw in a long and a “good Quality” post once a while. Just can’t manage to throw great lengthy posts every day :(

  • India 365 says:

    Great one dude!!

Yes in deed we expect regular post from regular bloggers, at the same time we don’t also look for frequency, we only look for Quality of help you deliver. Every post will help somebody at some point. Now let me tell you a simple equation for blogging success “The more you want to help others, the more others will want to help you.”

  • Agent 001 says:

For me it is currently 3-4 post a week but I am thinking of blogging daily or at least 6 a week.

  • sham says:

It depends on the time available to the author..We should not put burden on author forcing him to update daily in spite of his busy schedule..

  • Neo says:

Well it depends on the writer I think. If its a personal blog then I have seen some writer writing 1 post everyday. Whereas is there are multi authors
then 2 or 3 posts everyday. But if I talk about personal blogs since I’m a single individual and I have a personal blog I write once a week….I mean I try to.

    Thanks

  • well.. very inspiring article.. it is really very precious article for the beginners.. thanks dude

  • Sahil Kotak says:

I suggest for daily, because if you post daily then your viewers get the habit of viewing your blog daily. I Do so on blog.

  • Jimmy says:

I agree on most points. But I dont think a person needs to concentrate all his time on writing blog posts. 1 post a day will be more than enough and if he makes more just for the sake of it, the blogger will probably end up in trouble. you need to enjoy it in the end

  • Extreme John says:

Excellent tips for any new blogger or a pro blogger that might be caught in a rutt or not sure what to Do, yours tips are excellent.

  • Steve Yu says:

Yes, you are right, the frequency of blog postings does depends on blog niche. Like mine, technology blog will never run outs of content. So you can see at least one or two posts a day from tech blog. Some Do post more than 5 posts every single day.

    • Lax says:

Tech blogs should post at least 2 daily..else we can say that its inactive :) Good to publish 4 to 5 on tech blogs. Because most of the traffic comes from Search engines.

  • Sunil Jain says:

I wanted your help on this , you see from morning to evening i am busy in my college then from evening to night i am busy in my own shop. Atlast midnite i get the time which is not sufficient for me. So can you help me in managing my time for my blogging ???

    • Lax says:

You just use offline blogging techniques. Like take a note book when you sit in your shop or in college when your class teacher absent. What ever them time & place may be, just maintain a book and pen to draw your ideas or new posts. Just type them when ur free and schedule them on WP.

Nothing can be simple than this :)

  • Taufiq Hasan says:

I agree with you, we have to update our blog once a day if we are on technology news topics.

    • Lax says:

Yes that the hard fact :)

      • akira07 says:

I don’t know if technology news is that fast. But can we make many update about technology in 1 update in a week or maybe every 3 or 4 days?
We can makes a title : This Week Technology Update…!!!
That’s in way to solve busy people who makes technology blog.

  • Gary says:

To be honest I think that when starting a new blog you shoudn’t post on a daily basis, because you don”t have much traffic and many reader’s. after getting a good amount of traffc and radership i think it would be most practical to start posting on a daily basis or every 2 days.

Another option is that if you can post long posts at around 1000 words or more it should be oke for 3 days, but if you like writing normal posts it be be ideal to start posting every 2 days.

See what benefits you the most and see what is best for yourself as well, you may have a lack of time and post very rare. Find out the best way to Do this and take action.

There’s nothing more frustating then having your readers unsubscribe or stop visiting your blog because you never post anymore.

    Nice Post

    • Lax says:

Your view looks valuable. But if you don’t post more, you’ll not be indexed in SE more, thus you’ll get very less traffic. Howz if we Do like this: post daily from the day 1 and increase gradually & don’t forget to give some link juice to old posts :)

  • Most of the time, I used to update my blog for new content 4 times a week. So that I have time to promote my blog content seeking for new readers and visitors.

What’s the use of daily updated blog where no one read it, right?

I Do this promotion through forums, comments, and guest posting to other blogs instead of publishing my new content to my blog.

Update then Market your content should be a habit.

  • i love to read the blogs which updates daily.

even i update my blogs daily with a minimum of 2 posts.

  • During my busy college schedule, it is not possible for me to update my blog daily, I blog about twice a week.
But I think its working good for me because once when I post, my readers get about 3-4 days gap before my next post so they get time to give me link love and also Comment on each and every post of my blog.

  • I’m only updating my blogs when I have time. Usually once a week. I got only about 10 hits per day. Sir Lax, I’m going to follow your advices and let you know if my stats improve. I’ll post more articles frequently too.

    Thanks.

  • ZXT says:

I’m a new blogger and I think I can manage about 3 updates a week. Maybe for my blog, which is a random blog almost on everything is just right.

  • Lee Ka Hoong says:

I think it depends on how well you can update your blog, if you ensure that you’ll be able to update your blog with Quality and useful content everyday, that would be great! If you didn’t upgrade for some days but once awhile you share great content, that would be fine too.

I used to update my blog once 3 days or more frequent depending on how many task on hand I have.

In long run, quality of the content is still the key to build Reputation. I see you handle this very well Lax! :)

  • akira07 says:

Even my blog is about my daily life, i often get blogger block :( . But i’m always try to update it at least 2-3 times per month. It’s normal, to think that i have not just 1 blog, but 7 blog.

  • Albert says:

Sorry I’m very lazy in this matter. I mean posting a article in my blog daily.

I’m earning $20 a month without doing nothing in my blog. If I post 10 posts in a week means, I can earn up to $10 per day.

hmmm I have to create schedule to manage my works. After that only I can sit and write some articles.

Hi Lax, Do you have any Schedule for Bloggers like me.

    • mostlyBlog says:

hey Albert that is good that you are earn some money without doing nothing.

      • Albert says:

        @mostlyBlog,

Yes. I’m earning without doing noting in my blog. But for being like this I worked hard in those times.

I mean, getting page rank for my blog. Link Building etc. So everything is behind the Hard Work only.. ok any how thanks for your Comment..

    • akira07 says:

Do you mean if you post 20 article in week, you can get $20/day?

I think chitika or Adsense earning is not affected by how many article published per week. Can you explain this? Thanks :D

      • Albert says:

@akira07: Not like that… I won’t post any sponsored articles. I’m running so many networks in blog to earn that much in single day. But I have to sit and post 20 articles in week… :)

  • I once posted every 3 days and suddenly dropped to very 5 days. Search engine traffic to my blog slowed down till I went back on the normal schedule again. I guess the search engine bots had gotten used to fresh content every 3 days and were pissed at not getting it. lol. One thing I’ve noticed though is that with increase in the maount of backlinks that I’m creating via commenting on blogs and forums, I’ve been able to have an erratic posting schedule but the search engine traffic hasn’t dwindled at all. It has remained quite consistent I must say.
With regards to the length of the posts, it all depends on what I’m writing about. If I’m Promoting a free ebook download, I keep it short and sweet BUT tutorials can run for as long as necessary to get my point across to the readers.

  • @Albert: What is the source of the $20 a day you make on your blog? Is it Adsense or affiliate links?

@Rahul: Are you referring to Grizzly Bear? He updates quite irregularly yet gets massive traffic to his blogs

    • Albert says:

@Udegbunam Chukwudi: That $20 per day includes, Private links sales, Adsense Earnings, Chitika and CPM Ads.

But my Chitka units can generate $10 per day. Because I’m getting 80% traffic from Search Engines.

Here I could not include bidvertiser and adbrite earnings. Also I won’t post any Sponsored posts.

Remember $20 per day is my ordinary aim. I’m expecting $60 from all of my network sites.
