Favicon for your Site
A favicon (short for “favorites icon“) is an icon associated with a website or webpage that is intended to be used when you bookmark the page, browsers also use them, typically in the URL bar.![]()
Creating Favicon: If you are a Photoshop king, then I don’t need to say anything here just create a 16*16 image to use as favicon. (Short word/image like TZI for TechZoomIn) and save that image as “favicon.ico”.
If you don’t know or don’t want to use Photoshop, follow me I will show a simple method to create your favicon image. Just open www.cooltext.com and select some image style, font style, colors and Click on Render Logo. It will automatically prepare your Images with given styles so just download that image to your desktop.
After downloading image, just open www.favicongenerator.com and browse your image from desktop and click Generate Favicon! Button. It will give you an image of 16*16 pixels. Download the image and place it on desktop. Don’t forget to name it as favicon.ico.
Congratulations, you have your very own favicon! To get it installed on your WordPress site, just skip down to “Installing a Favicon in WordPress”.
Installing Favicon in WordPress:
- Upload your new favicon.ico File into your current theme’s main folder.
- Upload a copy of your favicon.ico file to the main/root directory of your site (i.e. http://example.com/favicon.ico) this will display the favicon to your Subscribers like Feedburner
- In order for your favicon to show up in browsers, you will need to edit your page header. To Do this, go to your WordPress Administration panel. Click on Design, and then click on Theme Editor. Select the file called Header or header.php.
- Paste the following code under <head> in your header.php and click save changes
<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”/favicon.ico” />
5. Check this by opening your home page in fresh browser.
Congratulations! You should see your favicon now. If not don’t be panic just clear your browser history and refresh the page couple of times.
Check it in all the browsers to ensure that everyone should be able to see your favicon from now onwards. Enjoy Blogging with your new Favicon!
Do you have Favicon?

For bloggers that Do not have their own domain / host, they have to upload the favicon to any image Hosting provider which supports .ico format. In most cases, they do not support .ico, worry not, as .png extension can also be set as a favicon.
Hope this little tip can help those without a host.

#karteek,
Apple from Blogging for novice will hlep you in this regard
@Karteek,
You can use the above method mentioned by Lax. It works the same, the only difference is the image format. There are plenty of icon source in .png available for free. (You can check it out here) Or just convert your image File to .png
@Lax,
You’re most welcome. As far as I’m concerned, Photobucket only supports .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png and .bmp
Thanks Blogging4novice…

Another reason for me to use WordPress than blogspot. Thanks for posting Lax.
